Software engineering Newport, South Wales Nineteen years in

Datsoft is a software engineering practice in Newport, run by an engineer nineteen years into the work. We write the unglamorous parts: the migrations, the error paths, the queue that has to drain at 3am with nobody watching. Web applications, mobile, integration and legacy rescue.

01 Case notes

Four jobs, and what changed after them

Delivered by the engineer who now runs Datsoft.

01

Builders’ merchant

Cwmbran · 2023
A stock system written in 1998 that three people knew how to restart. We read it for five weeks before writing anything, then moved it a table at a time while the yard kept trading. Nobody worked a weekend.

02

Commercial insurance broker

Cardiff · 2024
Underwriters were re-keying the same risk into four spreadsheets. We built one quote engine over the existing policy database, and left the spreadsheets in place for a quarter so the underwriters could check our arithmetic against theirs.
34 sec To produce a quote. It used to take 11 minutes
03

Plant hire operator

Bristol · 2024
Drivers on sites with no signal, ringing the depot to confirm every drop. An offline-first app that queues the paperwork and syncs when the phone finds a bar of reception. Tested on a real lorry, in real rain, for six weeks.

Medical device manufacturer

Bridgend · 2025
Their production software recorded what happened but not who did it or when it changed. We rebuilt the audit trail underneath the application without touching the interface the floor staff already knew.

Figures are the clients’ own, measured before and after. Two of the four are happy to take a call about it; the other two asked us not to pass their details on.

02 The practice

The company is new. The way it works took nineteen years.

01 — Origin

It started with a rebuild that never landed

In 2017 our founder took a bench seat on a public-sector rebuild in Cardiff. Sixteen months, two hundred pages of specification, and nothing at the end of it that anybody ever used.

That ended in March 2019, and settled the rule everything here still runs on: nothing counts until it is in production and somebody who did not build it depends on it.

02 — The turn

In 2021 we took a job we could not do

A forecasting engine, taken on out of confidence rather than competence. Four months in it was plain the job wanted a statistician, not an engineer reading papers at midnight. We refunded £31,400, handed back the code and the notes, and named two firms better placed to finish it.

It cost most of a year to put right. It also produced the one rule that has never been bent since.

03 — How it runs

We decline the work that is not ours

Roughly one enquiry in four gets a polite no. We do not take design-only projects, we do not build on WordPress, and we do not accept work that needs a specialism this practice does not hold.

Most of this industry bills by the day, which quietly pays a supplier to be slow. We quote the piece of work. If we finish early, that is our problem to enjoy, not yours to fund.

Discovery & technical scoping
Two weeks. You leave with an architecture, a risk register and a fixed-price plan — and you are free to take all three to another firm.
from£2,850
Web application build
Internal tools, customer portals, quoting and booking systems. Built to be handed over, with the deployment scripts and the boring documentation.
from£16,000
Mobile app, iOS and Android
One codebase, both stores, offline by default. We assume the signal drops, because on the sites our clients work on it does.
from£24,500
Systems & API integration
Getting your accounting package, your CRM and the thing your warehouse runs on to agree about the same order. Retries, reconciliation, an alert when they disagree.
from£6,400
Legacy rescue & code audit
A written read of what you own: what is safe, what is load-bearing, what should be replaced and in which order. Delivered as a document, not a sales pitch.
from£3,600
Maintenance & on-call
Patching, dependency upgrades, monitoring and a named engineer who answers the phone. Monthly, cancellable on 30 days’ notice.
from£1,450 /mo
Fractional CTO
For companies with developers but no one to argue with them. A day or two a month: hiring, architecture calls, reading the contracts your suppliers send you.
from£690 /day

Nothing selected yet. Figures are starting points. We fix the price after discovery and quote the work rather than the hours, so the number you sign is the number you pay.

04 How an engagement runs

Four stages, and you can stop after any of them

01

A call, thirty minutes

No deck, no discovery workshop, no invoice. You describe the problem and we tell you honestly whether it is ours to solve.

02

Discovery, two weeks, fixed price

We read the systems you already have and write the plan. It is yours whatever happens next — several clients have taken it elsewhere, and that is a fair outcome.

03

Build, in two-week increments

Working software at the end of every increment, on your infrastructure, reviewed with you. Invoiced as each increment completes, not up front.

04

Handover, or we stay on call

Your repository, your accounts, your runbook, written so a new developer can follow it. If you would rather we kept the pager, that becomes a monthly arrangement.

There are two ways in.
